SUMMER DIRECTOR OF STUDIES  

 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

  • Full-time summer employment from July 16 - July 28

  • Responsible for all academic aspects of the EFL summer camp program 

  • Supervises EFL teachers and company curriculum  

  • Expect to work 40+ hours per week

MLA (Move Language Ahead) is an industry leader in providing safe, educational, and cultural vacations to students from around the world. Each year thousands of students travel with MLA as part of our short-term English as a foreign language (EFL) programs. Along with our proprietary EFL curriculum, we also provide our students with great excursions featuring some of the most popular historical and tourist destinations across the country. 

The MLA EFL Director of Studies (DoS) is a part-time, seasonal position (mid-June to mid-August) with Move Language Ahead, which is the trade name for Study World Corporation. The EFL Director of Studies works under the direct supervision of the Director of Academics for USA programs. The EFL Director of Studies is hired to supervise the delivery of five levels of MLA EFL curriculum by EFL Instructors to international high school students attending a two-week or three-week cultural immersion program. The EFL Director of Studies must liaise with the group leaders (International chaperones) in matters of curriculum, placement and classroom pedagogy. They will also be required to communicate with the MLA Center Director regarding students and scheduled program activities.

DATES 

The MLA EFL Director of Studies is expected to commit to and be available for the entire program. Absence during the small window of contact with the students is detrimental to the program.
 
July 17, 2024 – July 29, 2024* 
*Contract dates may vary to meet the needs of the program 
 
Classes are taught Monday through Saturday (occasionally on Sunday) in 90-minute sections for a total of 15 hours per week. Morning lessons are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; afternoon lessons are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The EFL Director of Studies is required to be present during all lessons as well as additional office hours as necessary. 
 
PLEASE NOTE: Schedule and sessions dates are subject to change depending on the needs of the program. The DoS must also take part in mandatory training prior to the opening of the center 

 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE 
 
EFL Director of Studies must have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent along with prior ESL/EFL related experience and must represent MLA Move Language Ahead values and model those values to subordinates and colleagues. 
 
Required skills include

  • Ability to maintain organization of classes, students, and program curriculum 

  • Ability to use program curriculum to deliver excursion-based lessons 

  • Ability to use and supplement program curriculum to facilitate project/task-based learning

  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Word and Excel 

  • Ability to be pleasant, polite, and cooperative with fellow employees, vendors, and guests 


Preferred qualifications include: 

  • Prior ESL/EFL teaching experience 

  • Master’s Degree 

The completion of a satisfactory background check and child abuse clearance is required. 

 
KEY POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES 
 
Pre-Program 

  • Attend all required training/orientation meetings prior to the start of a session 

  • Become familiar with MLA EFL curriculum and MLA Boards 

  • Review the program schedules 

  • Assist the Director of Academics with EFL Instructor induction and orientation 

  • Oversee the set-up and distribution of the EFL Instructor iPads (if necessary) 

 

Assigning of classes 

  • Review results of the online placement test to correctly place the students in up to five levels of EFL instruction 

  • Create class rosters and attendance sheets based on placement testing results using the MLA Boards 

  • Participate in the induction presentation to orient the students to the campus including classrooms, computer labs, library, etc. 

  • Conduct a meeting with the students’ group leaders in order to discuss the academic program, placement test procedure and evaluative process 
     

Daily Instruction 

  • Maintain a safe and professional environment suitable for teaching young students 

  • Schedule classroom teachers and ensure that they are on duty at the appropriate times 

  • Coordinate any and all changes in classroom locations and ensure that teachers and students begin daily instruction promptly and in an organized manner using the MLA Boards 

  • Keep records of daily student attendance through the MLA Boards and report absences to the Center Director  

  • Occasionally observe classroom instruction to ensure that site provided curriculum and in-house materials are being used appropriately to instruct the students 

  • Hold weekly meetings with instructors to discuss the program as well as provide academic support 

  • Be available to discuss any student-related issues with the student's group leaders 

  • Be prepared to substitute in the classroom in case of EFL Instructor absence 
     

Final Assessment / Graduation 

  • Supervise the completion of final feedback and assessment for each student 

  • Coordinate the graduation ceremony with the Center Director 

  • Process and ensure the accuracy of students’ graduation certificates 
     

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Direct supervisory responsibility includes the authority to effectively recommend, hire, suspend, recall, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees 

  • Maintain accurate records of subordinate attendance, performance, and discipline 

  • Oversee the collection and inventory of the EFL Instructor iPads 
     

COMPENSATION 
 
The EFL Director of Studies position is classified as exempt and will receive a weekly salary commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and experience. This position does provide housing and full board.
